Summers 2007 and 2008, Will and Janean and family chilled out at Rio Frio.
Texas
Enroute to Del Rio, Judy PS toured Judge Roy Bean's "Jersey Lilly" at Langtry.
Read about it at
 www.desertusa.com/mag98/aug/papr/du_roybean.html.
Bean named his saloon after actress Lilly Langtry, whom he saw perform in
San Antonio in 1888 but never met.

Frio River/Frio Canyon area

The Frio River rises from the juncture of the East, West,
and Dry Frio rivers and flows across Uvalde,  Frio,LaSalle,
McMullen, Live Oak counties for 200 miles to its mouth on
the Nueces River, a mile south of Three Rivers. It's joined
by the Leona River in southern Frio County, the Sabinal in
southeastern Uvalde County, and the Atascosa two miles
north of Three Rivers in Live Oak County. Other tributaries
include Hackberry, Cibolo, Hondo, and Live Oak creeks
and Big Slough.

The Frio River runs east of Uvalde, Texas, and west of
Pearsall, through Leakey, Texas, Knippa, and Concan,
Texas. Downstream it runs through Fowlerton, Tilden, and
Three Rivers. It is dammed to form the Corder, Frank
Kincaid, Miller, Garwood, V-Bar, Sirianni, Tips, and Diamond
Shamrock lakes and the Burns, Bennett, and Choke
Canyon reservoirs. Frio is Spanish for "cold." In 1689,
Alonso De Leónqv referred to the river as the Rio Sarco.

Bean's Grave
According to this article by Elizabeth
Gibson, Phantly Roy Bean was a real
rapscallion. Despite having only 3 months
education and having broken just about
every law, in 1882 he was appointed
Justice of the Peace for Pecos County by
the county commissioners.

Judy PS 's  picture of 89,000-acre Amistad Lake
from her Mexico trip in June. The lake and dam, completed in 1969, are owned by the United States and Mexico.
They are located at the confluence of the Rio Grande and Devil's River, 12 miles northwest of Del Rio, Texas.
Amistad Lake was built for flood control, conservation, irrigation, power, and recreation. Amistad is the Spanish
word for "friendship," and  honors the cooperation of both countries in the project.

Spicewood, Near Marble Falls
Judy PS says, "If you see Opie's BBQ, you're in
Spicewood, out in the country."

"Gas prices are out of sight, July 2008."
Find Spicewood, pop. 5,520, 27 mi. NW of Austin, 16
mi. SE of Marble Falls.
It's in Burnet Co. and includes waterfronts on
Cypress Creek, Colorado River, Fall Creek, Lake
Travis, and Pedernales River. There's a range of
properties worth from $100 K to $4 mil. in the real

Judy writes, "Spicewood is really just a bunch of
farms and ranches. These are some of the local
cows and goats in the area. I pass them all the time
and I just love the goats! Spicewood really doesn’t
have much of a town---just the Baptist Church,
community center, elementary school and our new
library. The gas station is across from Opie’s which
has a new location located right on Hwy. 71. The old
car is at the downtown intersection in Spicewood,
along with the church and community center. Krause
Springs is close by."
Mission San Jose is only one of the five Spanish
missions in San Antonio. The Alamo is another.
Have you visited the rest?
Apr. 20 from Judy PS: I spent a nice relaxing weekend in
South Texas on the beautiful Gunn Ranch, an exotic animal
ranch.  The zebras, wildebeest, oryx, African longhorns and
other wild animals were absolutely fascinating.  The wildflowers
were in full bloom and what a show, as we have had so much
rain this year.  Last year this place was dry and brown.  Pictures
just don't capture the real beauty of this area in the spring time,
especially with lots of rain. Hope to see you all in June!  Judy
