Aug. 15, 2008, I had a fine talk with Roy Lee, resulting in the following. It was so
good to hear his voice after all these years!
Roy Lee's birthday is October 13. Born in Bell County, he started elementary
school in Taylor's Valley, then transferred to Tyler Elementary when his family
moved to Belton.
After high school, he spent 15 years rodeoing, specializing in bull-riding. He
must have been pretty good, as he won several first-place buckles over the
years. (I pried this out of him; he wasn't bragging.) When I told him that I really
admired his courage, he said that he really enjoyed rodeoing. However, a
bull-riding injury kept him from being able to join the military, and he feels a
little bit bad about that. The rest of his career was in construction work. He
worked for A.D. Reed Construction in Houston for about 15 years, ending up
as a superintendent. He's retired from construction, but now sells cedar
fence posts.
Along the way, he married Brenda, who already had three boys. He sounded
really proud of those sons. The boys attended Belton schools, and all three
are now construction workers. He has ten grandchildren. His eldest son lives
nearby and the kids spend a lot of time with him and Brenda. He loves it!
He's done some traveling in the U.S.: Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and California
are among the places he's been.
Since retirement, his favorite things to do are enjoying his family, watching
the grandkids play ball, sitting on the front porch in his rocking chair, and
country-western dancing.
Roy Lee's hair turned gray when he was about 26. Can't you just imagine how
handsome he looked with his distinguished gray hair against that tan he got
from rodeo riding? He still has his hair, but doesn't still wear the same size
pants he wore in high school. Duh!
Will we be able to recognize him at our 50th Reunion? Will he recognize US?
