Great phone conversation with Polly. She's got so much energy, it
perked me right up to talk with her! This is what I gleaned from our
long talk, but I'm hoping she'll write up her bio herself---which will
be much more fun.
Polly was born January 19, 1942. After high school, she took some
college courses, including journalism. These gave her the
credentials to take a job in 1962 in Washington, D.C., with the
leading newspaper of Congressional events, Roll Call. She
hob-nobbed with Senators, Congressmen, their wives and aides,
and even attended events where the President held court. She
couldn't bear the fast pace, however---too many evening cocktail
parties for her---and after 3 months, she lit out for home.
Winston, BHS Class of '61, came into her life "on his white horse,"
they were married, and they've been together ever since. They
have four children and 14 grandchildren/6 step-grands, and live in
Belton.
She says, "I have been all over the States bowling in national
tournaments, plus all over Texas bowling." One place she found
very powerful was Niagara Falls. She's so tiny that I questioned
how she could swing those heavy bowling balls. Her secret: a
10-pound ball.
A 1989 trip to the West Coast was one of her favorite trips. She
loved Yosemite, King Mountain and the Sequoias (sounds like a
good name for a rock band, doesn't it?), the Redwood forests,
Hearst Castle, Portland, and Seattle.
She also spent three weeks in Germany, landing in Frankfurt.
(We'll have to ask her more about this trip.)
Polly has a part-time job selling bingo cards. She likes being out
and talking to the players.
Winston is still working; he's just not a guy who likes to sit around
at home in front of the TV. He retired from Wilson Arts after 25
years, and is now driving a truck for Bell County.
I'm looking forward to seeing both of them at our 50th Class
Reunion.

You'll remember Winston when he was a high school junior. (Polly says she'll send a current photo soon.)

Polly and Winston's grandson, Matt Martin, a Chugiak High junior, was named the Carl's Jr. Athlete of the Week this month for the second time. He is a high-point shooter on the rifle team. Yea! Matt!
