George didn't exactly recommend this movie, but wrote that it was
reminscent of what happened with our senior prom. He says, "The theme
of the movie
Footloose is that the town fathers of a small Midwestern
town would not allow a senior prom because of the evils of dancing. The
kids in the movie fought the ban, and eventually won (of course they did,
it's a movie). We did not have a senior prom because the powers on the
school board at that time decided that we would not participate in the
evils of dance, but would have a banquet instead.  Of course we, being
good and compliant youths of the '50s, did not fight it. That is why no one
can find anything related to the prom - it never happened. Small town life
has its moments."

This cult 1980s teen film starring Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer was based
on events that took place in 1979 in conservative Elmore City, Oklahoma.
In the film, Ren McCormack
(Kevin Bacon) moves from the big city to a
small town and finds, to his dismay, that dancing is banned. He soon
starts falling for a girl, Ariel Moore
(Lori Singer), who, as fate would have
it, is none other than the daughter of the town's fire and brimstone,
anti-dancing preacher, Reverend Shaw Moore
(John Lithgow). The film
was one of several popular 1980s dance films, along with
Flashdance
and
Breakin', and was acclaimed for its catchy soundtrack. A remake of
the film, starring Zac Efron, is reportedly in the works. (This review is from
