Old Forty-Fives (and much
more!)
This fabulous site,
www.oldfortyfives.com
---created by
OldBlueWebDesigns.com---has
great stuff from our childhood
and teen years. Your life will
pass before your eyes and you
don't even have to have a
Near-Death Experience. You'll
hear the old music, feel the old
angst, see your old sports
heroes, movie stars, favorite
singers, furniture, cars, vintage
ads (including Burma Shave).
Everything's here but your
grandmother.
(And thanks so much, Dewey!)

"Where are you, little star?"
Thus begins the plaintive call on Billboard's
Number 1 song for one week in 1959,
"Mr. Blue" by
The Fleetwoods.
Words and Music by DeWayne Blackwell

Our guardian star lost all his glow
The day that I lost you.
He lost all his glitter the day you said "No,"
And his silver turned to blue.
Like him, I am doubtful that your love is true,
But if you decide to call on me,
Ask for Mr. Blue.

I'm Mr. Blue (wah-a-wah-ooh)
When you say you love me (ah, Mr. Blue),
Then prove it by goin' out on the sly,
Provin' your love isn't true,
Call me Mr. Blue.

I'm Mr. Blue (wah-a-wah-ooh)
When you say you're sorry (ah, Mr. Blue),
Then turn around, head for the lights of town
Hurtin' me through and through,
Call me Mr. Blue

I stay at home at night (I stay at home)
Right by the phone at night (right by the phone)
But you won't call
And I-I won't hu-urt my pride (call me Mr.)

I won't tell you (wah-a-wah-ooh)
Why you paint the town (ah, Mr. Blue)
A bright red to turn it upside down
I'm paintin' it too
But I'm paintin' it blue
Call me Mr. Blue (wah-a-wah-ooh)
Call me Mr. Blue (wah-a-wah-ooh)

Call me Mr. Blue

As "Bowzer," skinny, 6'3" Jon Bauman led the
doo-wop group Sha Na Na for fourteen years,
delighting us by flexing his almost
non-existent biceps and crooning the low
notes. His motto was "Grease for Peace." At
its peak, "Sha Na Na" was the #1 syndicated
TV show in America.
But Bowzer was so much more than he
seemed. Born in Brooklyn, he played classical
piano at age 7, started at Juilliard at age 12,
and was graduated Magna Cum Laude from
Columbia College in New York.
In l969, Jon and some of his Columbia
classmates started the band as a nostalgia
thing, featuring the old fifties' doo-wop music.
On the soundtrack of the movie
Grease, they
sang many greats such as "Hound Dog,"
"Rock & Roll Is Here to Stay," "Blue Moon,"
and "Tears on My Pillow." They also appeared
in the Woodstock movie as well as the more
recent Festival Express.
