I got an Associate of Arts Degree from Temple Jr. College and attended
classes at U of T in Austin for a while. I then worked for civil service at Ft.
Hood beginning in 1963. That is where I met Merle in 1965. He was stationed
at Ft. Hood and had transferred out from Ft. Ord, California, as a supply
specialist in the army. Merle is a rare breed, a "native Californian" born in
Chico, CA. We married in August of that year; been together ever since.
We had 2 daughters - Mary, born 1972, and Laura (now deceased), born
1969. She died last August at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston after
a 9-year battle with chronic mylogenous leukemia (CML). We are still
staggering from that one. She was a wonderful professional artist and was
just beginning to sell some of her work as an independent when she got
sick. She also enjoyed doing the artistic finishing work for several local
taxidermists. She was attending North Texas State U. in Denton, but was
never able to finish her degree there.
Our Mary has been a successful career woman now for several years, and
has done right well for someone who has only had a little college. She
recently lost her job of 15 years with Tasco Industries, a market rep
company in North Dallas, when they sold out to Lee Wayne, Sterling Il. So
she will be looking for work again soon. Something we are especially
excited about right now is the anticipation of the birth of our first
grandchild in late January. Mary lives not far from us in Lewisville, Texas.
My husband Merle began a long career with the utilities back in 1966 after
he got out of the army. He worked for Lone Star Gas then, up until he was
forced to retire with them at age 55, after Lone Star was purchased by TXU
Company. We also lived in Modesto, California, during the last half of the
70's, at which time we moved back to Belton to be near my ailing parents in
spring of 1981. We moved here to this house when Merle was rehired by
Lone Star in 1981 as a warehouse and supply manager, and have been
here ever since. I worked also for Moore Business Forms in Denton for 9
years, and just retired from Xerox here in Lewisville in May of 2005.
Now we are just a couple of retired old folks rattling around in the house
with an ancient old dog, 2 spoiled cats and a cockatiel. My husband enjoys
his vegetable garden and I like piddling around with the flower beds. I
don't have any good pictures ready for sharing right now with you. Will try
that later.
Sincerely, Linda W.
