Linda completed our questionnaire, and the following
are her responses:
Attended Tyler Elementary. Just read Where the Red Fern
Grows with my granddaughter and could tell her that I
had slid down a covered fire escape. She was not
impressed. We have both done a lot more exciting things
but it sure seemed exciting the first time I went down it
on a practice fire escape.
Lots of special friends. Judy E, Jeanne, Jean were in our
wedding, but, no, I have not kept up. Shame on me. Of
course I can tell you where all of Joe's friends are (they
went from kindergarten - collage to army together).
I have been married to Joe for 48 years. We had four
children in six-and-a-half years so I was very busy. We
spent one year at Fort Polk, La. when Joe's National
Guard unit was called up. One of the things that I
remember from that time was playing bridge with the
general's wife with rollers in my hair (Joe was not an
officer and these things usually did not happen). I was
young, good at bridge, and did not think twice about it. I
look back, shake my head and think how great it is to be
young and full of confidence.
Our four children are Carol, who lives in Dallas and
works for the Baptist Foundation in their investment
department; Karen Kay, who is divorced with two
children---Lindsey is a Junior at UT at San Antonia and
Logan is a freshman at Texas Tech; Buck (Joseph Ray,
III) and his wife Cindy, who live in San Angelo and Emily
(5th grade); and Sharon and her husband Mitch who
live in Christoval (20 miles from San Angelo) and Mitchell
(7th grade). Mitch also has two girls, Kelsey who is a
sophomore at Tarleton State and Jamey (10th grade in
Midland). Most of my friends will tell you that the
grandchildren are the love of my life---not that Joe
isn't--- but most of our activities are involved in their
activities.
Joe and I both have been very active in San Angelo.
Between us, we have been on many of the boards of
civic and community organizations. After our last child
left for collage (Joe went to Baylor and 3 of our 4
children went to Baylor and we are not Baptist), I decided
that if I was going to work as a volunteer for more than
20 hours a week, I might as well be paid for it and I
worked for the Tom Green County Juvenile Justice
System for 13 years as a resource specialist. I
developed programs for the Center, the school system
and the community. It was very much fun, and the thing
that I am most proud of is the mentor program that I
developed with God leading me all the way. In seven
years, we had over 1000 volunteers who worked with
students at the school or the Juvenile Justice Center.
I retired 8 years ago so I could be more active with our
grandchildren. Joe has retired several times but keeps
finding new things to do. He has an office and does
financial planning---allows him to play golf 3 or 4 times a
week and stay active in the community.
At one time I was a good tennis player, bridge player, and
I read a great deal. These days our yellow lab walks me, I
volunteer at Mitchell and Emily's schools one half-day
once a week at each school (at Christoval and Wall,
Texas), and am active in our church and the Emmaus
Community. We follow all of the grandchildren's major
events, and since Mitchell and Emily live close by, we go
to at least one or two events a week. Many of those
events are out of San Angelo and we travel to see them.
Jan's note: We'll see Linda and Joe at our 50th!
I was a "Red Lady" for our annual heart luncheon; gave short testimony on my heart disease experiences.
