Your Age by Diner and
Restaurant Math
8/29/07 from Linda M.
Revised for 2008 by Gary

1. First of all, pick the number of
times a week that you would like to
go out to eat.
(more than once but fewer than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2
(just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your
birthday this year add 175
8.
If you haven't, add 1757.

6. Now subtract the four digit year
that you were born.

You should have a three digit
number.

The first digit of this was your
original number
(I.e., how many times you want to
go out to restaurants in a week.)

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh, YES, it is!!!!!)

THIS IS THE GAME FOR 2008.
It will change next year.

When I asked for one of our math geniuses
to explain how this works, Gary "stepped up
to the dinner plate" with this elegant
explanation that, with my husband's help, I
(Jan=Math Dummy) could work out. Thanks,
Gary!

Let’s put this puzzle into a formula where
“n” is the single digit number you pick and
you were born in July 1942:

((n x 2) + 5) x 50 + 1758 – 1942 = ?

Rearranging the formula to separate the
puzzle parts:

((n x 2) x 50) + (5 x 50) + 1758 – 1942 = ?

Simplifying the equation:

100n + 250 + 1758 – 1942 = 100n + 66 = n66

Multiplying your single digit number by 2 and
again by 50 produces your number followed
by 2 zeros. (100, 200, 300, etc)

Multiplying 5 time 50 results in 250

250 added to 1757 or 1758 provides the year
of your last birthday – 2007 or 2008

Subtracting your birth year will give your age
on your last birthday.

Adding this two digit number to your picked
number expressed as a one hundred
multiple then produces the puzzle result.

This won’t work once you reach 100 years of
age of course. (We should live so long!)
"Guess Your Number Game" Puzzle Solution
Many, many thanks to Gary (Coaster)

Screen 1: You are asked to choose a number,

then click the button that is the same color as your number.

The numbers 1-25 are arranged in 5 groups utilizing 5 colors. When you pick a color, it has 5
numbers associated with it, including the one you selected.

Screen 2: You are asked to click on one of the 9  colors in a box. This selection has no meaning; it
doesn't matter what color you select here.

Screen 3: If you ignore the colors used for the numbers in the houses as presented
and look at the numbers with the same color they had in screen 1,
You will see only one number of each color from screen 1 is in each house.

The numbers 26-30 are added in with no consequence since they could not have been selected in
Screen 1. So all 25 numbers from screen 1 have a unique combination of color from screen 1 and
house from screen 2.
Therefore, the number you chose is identified by your two choices.

Screen 4 - Your selection has no meaning; it doesn't matter what crystal ball you select.

Screen 5 - Your selection has no meaning; your number will be behind any of the choices.

Enjoy,
Coaster
