Bravo, Bravo, Bravo to Jan, Judy PS, Janean, Dewey, and everyone else who has contributed.
What a wonderful and lovely thing you are doing with this website. Thank you!!
To quote a Hallmark card (approximately), "There's a common ground where kindred souls
walk, that forever binds their souls." There is definitely a kindred spirit in the classmates of
the BHS Class of '60. I have discussed this over the years with many friends, family, and
associates, and so far, the feeling of being kindred spirits with your schoolmates seems to be
a rarity. Even for Bill (my husband), who graduated from The Flat (Texas) in a class of only 11,
there was not that feeling of connectedness.
To put 50 years into black and white words is somewhat daunting. However, here goes.
As a junior, I married Kenneth Owens, as most of you know. Clinton Shed, Peggy Webster, and
I all checked out of school at the same time. Kenneth and I had four children: Scot lives in
Austin and is married to a perfectly lovely girl, and they seem to be a terrific match for each
other. His wife Betsy has two grown children. Both Scot and Betsy were in their 40's when they
married and will likely not have children together. Scot has a frame shop in Austin and by all
accounts is very good. His Betsy is the Infectious Disease Control Nurse at one of the
hospitals in Austin. She is also busily working on her R.N. degree. Paul, my second son, is
living outside of Palestine and I am praying that he is making some good life choices, finally.
My third son, Wade, we buried in 1990, as many of you know. At the time of his death, he had a
son, Wade Matthew, who was 14 months old. (Matthew is now 19, has finally gotten a break in
life, and is living in Cleburne, about 30-45 minutes from us.) And Stacey, the "baby girl," has
been living in Austin since she graduated from UTHSC in San Antonio. She is a dental
hygienist and has been working for the same dentist for 10 to 12 years. She very much likes
her professional choice and loves her patients. Her husband is an attorney who graduated
from A&M. They have no children. Both Bill and I would love more grandchildren; we shall see
what the future holds.
After working at the old Gibson Pharmacy and then for Jane and Richard in their pharmacy in
Belton, I attended TJC in Temple and MHB in Belton. In 1976 I started working at Scott and
White in Temple as a medical secretary. Then when Bill and I married in 1985 (and what a
blessing he is), I transferred to the Scott and White in Killeen. We lived in Killeen until moving
to Granbury, Texas, in 1993. Bill was associated with Modern TV in Killeen from opening day to
the time he retired in 1990. He was very active in civic politics, and we ran into Judy and Frank
occasionally at some of those events. Clinton Shed and Bill have some familial connection,
and over the years, after Peggy died, we saw Clinton from time to time. Anyway, after a year or
so, and building our house, retirement was not what Bill wanted, and he has been working
part-time for Pecan Plantation, where we live. We live about 15 miles outside of Granbury, and
at one time this entire area was a working pecan plantation, hence the name of this
development. Anyway, when we moved here, I began working in a small, three-physician
practice in town, where I was until last year, when I was involved in a fairly significant
automobile accident. The EMS personnel have told me that I am very lucky to be alive. My
4-Runner looked like a sports car. Anyway, that is when I lost my job, and now I am doing
medical transcription from home for a neurologist who opened her office in Granbury this past
June.
Bill has two children, Kurt and Rhonda. Kurt and his wife Kathy live in Burleson and are the
parents of our youngest grandchild, Klayton, who is a 19-year-old freshman at Baylor and
loves it. Rhonda has our oldest grandchild, Sarah, who is 21 and lives in California. She has
just completed schooling for a hopeful career in the production side of the music industry.
All three of our grandchildren were born after Bill and I married, and know us as Papoo and
Nan... What the first grandchild calls you is how you are forever after known.
Bill and I have done very little traveling since "retiring" and moving to Granbury. Our travels
now take us to visit family and friends. Kurt and Kathy have a ranch just outside of Ranger,
Texas, and we go there about once a month. The guys spend their time there working, but it is
therapy work for them. We all love to "hang" there; it is relaxing and great fun. "The Girls"
surprised me with tickets to see George Strait a couple of weeks ago in Austin. We had lunch
at The Moonshine in downtown Austin. What a fun place with good food and great wait-staff.
We see the kids often, some of them at least once or twice a month. We are involved in a
terrific church that, like Granbury and Pecan Plantation, has grown by leaps and bounds since
we moved there. (When we bought our lot, it was just a dirt path; now there are 3,000 homes
in this area. There were about 1200 when we moved here.
I am learning more computer-speak, slowly...mostly know how to do what is needed for the
work I do.
Over the years, I have seen some of our classmates, some more so than others: Jimmie, Ann,
Judy ER, Barbara, Marie, and others. I have heard from Jenny a few times and enjoyed visiting
with her. However, I have been much too lax in maintaining contact with anyone, and hope to
correct that. About 3 or 4 years ago, I ran into Buster (oops, Bill) and Joyce at DFW. They were
picking up a child and I was sending Rhonda and Sarah back to Phoenix, so we were able to
visit for a bit. Joyce and I worked together at Scott and White for a while prior to their
marriage. At Aunt Minnie (Henderson)'s services, I ran into several students from "older"
classes, one of whom Aunt Minnie always called "Georgia".... Can you guess who that is??
Hint, he is still gorgeous. Do any of you remember my cousin Bubba Newby? He was several
years older and attended the School for the Deaf in Austin, but after graduating from there, he
rarely missed a Tiger sporting event, even though he couldn't hear. He died this past week.
What a sweet soul he was.
So many of our classmates have done so much with their lives...makes one wish to have done
more.
Would love to see and/or hear from any and all. Regards to all our kindred spirits. I hold each
of you dear....And again, thank you to those of you who have shared to create this website.

(Soon we'll be getting a photo of Dicksy and Bill, but in the meantime, these will have to do.) Oct. 4, '08: Dicksy is indeed beautiful---she always was, as she sits with Jan on Jimmie's patio.

How did we decide on a mini Schnauzer? My daughter, Stacey's first puppy when she
graduated from college was a mini Schnauzer and we fell in love with her sweet disposition
(and her lack of shedding). They do have hair. Since she was a year old, she had been
previously named Tooty...which did not set so well with me. So, we decided on Trudy, which
has somewhat the same sound. Tomorrow, Thursday, she is having THE surgery for girls.
Since my terrifying wreck in 2007, I have been doing medical transcription at home, as my
previous employers told me that they could not hold my position at the clinic. God works in
wondrous ways. I have learned that I do have the self-discipline to work at home and
previously was very sure I did not. Anyway it seems to be working out okay.
Before coming to Belton, we moved when in the middle of my second grade, but I was
fortunate in that I rode back to Salado to finish that school year with one of my teachers. Then
started to school in third grade in Belton at Tarver Elementary on South Main then on to
Southwest with lots of our class. In Salado, Jimmie Nell and Donnie Co were schoolmates.
When we moved to Belton, we first lived at my father's lumber yard on what is now Interstate
35, then my parents built a new home on Elm Grove Road, just down the road from Bill Miller
and up the road from Joe Northam. Every BAD word I ever learned, I learned from listening in
on their conversations on the party line, especially Bill and Frank Turner's. Dale lived at the
opposite end of Elm Grove Road and Little River Road.

(too large) When we got to Clifton we
decided that Dicksy would be mad if she
knew we were that close without calling
her and of course she was glad we called,
we met in Glen Rose for lunch and then
decided to go on to Granbury to Dicksy's
house to see her new updated kitchen
(absolutely beautiful).
