10/27/07, I called Dale and had a nice chat. Here's what I learned about
his life.
Before he was even a gleam in Coach Birtchet's eye, he was born in
Belton one October 15.
After high school, he got a basketball scholarship to play for the
University of Texas; he also played baseball for U.T. His height, at 6'5",
surely added to his value at UT, not to mention the expertise he
developed in winning many games for the Tiger Cagers.
Dale and Helen met in Austin, and they married on January 23, 1965.
Having been awarded a degree in pharmacy, Dale went to work for a
small chain in Burleson, Texas, then moved to Mineral Wells. He had his
own drug store there for 30 years. During that time, he and Helen had
three children, a girl, Denise; a boy, Roger; and another girl, Deborah.
Denise studied nursing and married a doctor. She has two boys, ages 7
and 9, and they live in Wichita Falls, where Dale and Helen now live.
Roger is Dale and Helen's "cowboy," having been a rancher of Angus
cattle until he moved on to office work in a cattle genetics firm that
promotes semen sales. Deborah majored in government at U.T. and
worked for Senator Elizabeth Dole as her scheduling secretary in
Washington when Dole was running for President. She now works for a
Canadian oil company. She has a 4-year-old girl, Madeleine.
When Dale was in junior high, his father went into the cattle business.
Dale liked living in the country and working with cattle, so for about 11
years, he took a break from pharmacy and became very active raising
Simmental cattle. As president of the Simmental Cattle Association, he
traveled a lot around the U.S.
His son-in-law became part owner of a Christian baseball league, and
Dale really enjoyed attending the games. He also housed a baseball
player for a while.
Heart problems run in Dale's family, and all his family died long ago. Dale
had his own heart attack while in Mineral Wells, but, fortunately, he
survived. He feels he got wonderful care because his son-in-law, a
doctor, was able to direct him to the very best cardiologist. He's doing
very well now, having made some corrections in his life style.
He and Helen moved to Wichita Falls in October of 2006. When asked
what he does for fun, he exclaimed, "I went back to work!" He's a
full-time pharmacist for a Walgreen Pharmacy and loves it. He and Helen
also spend a lot of time with their children and grandchildren. Dale
watches sports on TV, and both he and Helen enjoy reading. Dale likes
mysteries, especially those of Sandra Brown and James Patterson.
He used to see Buster in Mineral Wells occasionally, and Richard called
to urge him to attend the reunion in 2006 (he already had another
commitment), but that's about all the contact he's had with the class.
He's looking forward to seeing everyone again at our 50th in 2010.
Here, at last, is Dale with his fine family at the wedding of Dale & Helen's youngest daughter Debbie to Dennis D., July 9, 2010 in
Fort Worth.
