It happened in Nazareth a long time ago
A virgin named Mary and Joseph, her beau,
Were planning their future, a wedding in May,
When Mary said, "Joseph, I've something to say.
An angel named Gabriel has visited me
And told me that soon a mother I'll be.
Now don't be alarmed, Dear, and don't look so grim.
It seems I've been chosen and favored by Him."
Then Joseph said, "Mary, what will folks say?
We're not even married. I'll send you away
To live with your aunt till the baby is due,
Then you can come home and we'll start life anew.
But later that evening while Joe was in bed,
An angel appeared in a dream and he said,
"Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife,
For she shall conceive by the Giver of Life.
"And she shall bring forth a Boy of great fame
And thou shalt call him Jesus by name.
He will be mighty, the King of the Jews
And the Gentiles, too, will share the good news."
Then Caesar Augustus sent out a fax
That said all the world would have to pay tax.
So Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem sped
To see their accountant and cough up some bread.
Now Mary had put on considerable girth
So they looked around for a place to give birth.
But the pre-natal classes they'd taken before
Said nothing 'bout straw or dung on the floor.
In the hills of Judea later that night
The shepherds looked up from their flocks with great fright.
An angel said, "Fear not, I bring you good news
A Savior is born, the King of the Jews."
Then off to Bethlehem the shepherds did fly
While a great host of angels lit up the sky
Saying, "Glory to God in the highest," and then
"Peace and goodwill on Earth toward men."
And so at this season of fun and good cheer
Let's not forget the reason we're here.
Tho' Mary and Joseph have long since been gone
The Baby of Bethlehem in our hearts still lives on.
