September 29, 2007: I reached Buddy on his cell phone in Dallas, where
he was taking a break from a meeting. We did a little catching up, and I
administered the Questionnaire:
Buddy was born on July 3 in Belton---another real Native Son. After
high school, he attended Temple College, then went on to Texas A&M
to study agronomy---which he said he never used. Instead, he sold
cars for a while, then went into the building business. He retired this
year on his birthday, and is loving retirement. (However, it seems he's
still working---something to do with electricity---we'll have to find out
more about that later.)
He has four children---two boys, Kevin and Keith, with Carolyn, and a
girl and a boy, Shalyn and Brandon, with Sherrlyn. He's also the
grandfather of five. I spoke to Sherrlyn, who was very gracious, and
gave me Buddy's cell number. They are now divorced.
A cruise to Grand Cayman is his fondest travel memory. He loved the
food, the sights, and the casino.
He enjoys playing golf, and guesses his handicap is about 12. He's
pretty much disgusted with the fare on T.V., other than sports.
I always liked to flirt with Buddy, who had the cutest dimples. When I
asked if he still had them, he said they were more like wrinkles now. I
didn't bother to ask him our gag question, "Do you still wear the same
size pants you wore in high school?," because during our banter he
reported that he still weighs 175. Sounds good to me!
He'd like to catch up with all the class, as he only sees Clarence, Bill
St., and Richard I from time to time, and has lost touch with everyone
else. Let's see if we can entice them all to our 50th Class Reunion!
If anyone's willing to take Buddy's picture (on penalty of getting a
broken camera, he says), we need a current photo, and some
grandchild pictures, of course.
